The Hermitage grounds is made up of more than 1,120 historical acres and will surely provide guests of any age with a memorable, one-of-a-kind experience. The Holiday season was celebrated at The Hermitage with gifts, music, dancing and many sweets enjoyed by all. “Little” Rachel, Jackson’s granddaughter, related that on Christmas morning as the family and the enslaved gathered on the veranda, Jackson leaned on his stick against the right-hand pillar. Today, we decorate The Hermitage to what was customary to the early 1800s. Natural materials such as greenery, fruits and acorns are used as decorations. The colorful offerings in winter’s dark days enhance the festivities.

She was Jackson’s beloved niece and White House hostess , wife of Major Andrew Jackson Donelson, Jackson’s private secretary, and mother of four young children, three of whom were born in the White House. Tulip Grove, another historic mansion onsite preserved by the Andrew Jackson Foundation, was completed in 1836 and was meant to be Emily and Andrew’s family home. It is possible that she died at Tulip Grove just months after its completion. She is buried in the Donelson Family Cemetery at the Hermitage Church.
